Some may say lately that if you want to look up crime in the newspaper just head to the sports page or the newsroom. Its true that certain accusations make for better headlines and what better headline than to see a sports star fall from that lofty pearch down to earth with us. And we will pay to see this.
Unfortunately for the voyeurs, sports stars should be treated just like everyone else. But no, we want to ruin carreers, take down their bosses and destroy for our own peace of mind, families and friends and resurrect gun control eventhough the overwhelming facts show theres a lot more to domestic violence than we want to discuss. Afterall not only do we have violent men, we also have violent women but we consistently discriminate in one direction.
As has always been the case, a rush to judgment leaves no justice for anyone. In Domestic violence cases we jump to crucifixtion at the slightest provocation and demand immediate public retribution when we what we should be doing is addressing the problem and I don' me the Dr. Phil approach.
Most courts, and I have sat a a Pro Tem judge, may have jurisdiction over the defendant but rarely, if ever, does that jurisdiction extend to the victim. We can tell the defendant to go to anger management but have absolutely no say so in what the victim should do.
We need to address the problem from both perspectives and do it fairly, if we want to solve domestic abuse. Men are abused as well as women and still both sides need to be addressed. Solve the problem. Don't feed your own iinsecurities by destroying careers, and ruining families. Treat the root of the problem and help both parties.
